Endangered Species

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) provides for citizen participation in management decisions that can have long term effects on land use and development activities. The ESA allows citizens to petition trust agencies to list species for protection, and provides for citizen comment on subsequent management decisions after a species' status has been determined. 10,000 Years Institute works with citizens and conservation groups to provide technical input during various stages of the ESA process.

For example, 10,000 Years Institute assisted the Center for Biological Diversity with their petition to have the Puget Sound population of killer whales listed under the Endangered Species Act. We synthesized multidisciplinary information on the exposures to and risks of organochlorine contaminants to the Puget Sound population of killer whales.
