Hello and welcome! The guide below will help you report invasive plants using our Invasive Plant Survey. By submitting reports of invasive plant locations, you contribute to local ecosystem health and help guide our management work. Thank you for helping conserve our beautiful and biodiverse ecosystem!

You are able to access the survey in several ways. The following link will present you with a choice between using a browser, and using the Survey123 field app: https://arcg.is/1TjW4u2. A QR code is provided below as well.

Option 1 - Survey123 Mobile App

  • Best for: Field surveys, offline data collection, GPS accuracy.

  • Download the app: Available free for iOS and Android.

  • Steps to begin:

    1. Download and install Survey123.

    2. Open the survey link or scan the QR code provided on our website.

    3. Download the survey for offline use.

Option 2 - Web Browser (Our Website)

  • Best for: Quick reporting on desktop or a mobile device (with internet access).

  • No app needed – just open the survey page on our website.

  • Works on any device with a browser.

  • Can be accessed directly in any browser, from our main website navigation menu, as shown below:

Step by Step Instructions

Using the Survey123 App

  1. Open Survey123 and select the invasive plant survey. You do not need an active account to access and contribute to this survey.

  2. Tap Collect to begin a new report.

  3. Enter name and contact information(if desired).

  4. Select the type of location where you found this plant.

  5. Record your location using the included map. If you have location services on, it will likely have detected your location already and may not require any input from you. If it appears correct, you can go to the next question.

  6. Select the species from the list, or select “unknown” if the species is not listed or you are unsure.

  7. Record the necessary environmental and detail photos of the plant and its surroundings.

  8. Tap Submit.

Using the Website

  1. Visit the Invasive Plant Reporting Survey.

  2. Allow location access in your browser.

  3. Enter name and contact information(if desired).

  4. Select the type of location where you found this plant.

Tips for Surveying and Data Collection

  • Ensure that your device has GPS/location services turned on before starting.

  • Take clear, close photos of leaves, flowers, and stems.

  • If unsure of species, select “Unknown” or “Other” and attach a photo.

  • Add notes about habitat or nearby landmarks.

  • Reach out to us if you have any questions about specific species, or would like a species added to the survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ArcGIS or Survey123 account?
No, you can use the survey link without creating an account.

Can I use the app offline?
Yes. Download the survey while online, then collect data with the Survey123 app in the field and sync later.

What if I don’t know the plant species?
Choose “Unknown” and include a photo. Our team will help identify it.

How many reports can I submit?
As many as needed! Please submit a new report for each patch or site.

What happens after I submit a report?
Your submission goes into our secure GIS database. Our staff will review entries and photos and use them to guide invasive species management efforts.

If I provide my contact information, will it be shared with outside(non-10KYI) parties?
No, your contact information(if provided, it is not required) will only be used by our team to keep track of who has submit surveys and to contact you in the event our team has any questions regarding your survey or its location.

I need to correct a submission. What should I do?
Contact us at surveyinfo@10000yearsinstitute.org with details and we can assist you with modifying the survey.

Troubleshooting

  • Survey won’t load in app → Check internet connection, update the app, or re-download the survey.

  • GPS location inaccurate → Move to an open area or manually enter a location. Areas with complex topography and limited open canopy can have limited satellite GPS reception. Alternatively, you can manually add a location using the map within the survey.

  • Browser or app asks for location → Click “Allow” when prompted so it can save the location of your survey.
