Mission Statement
10,000 Years Institute conducts innovative scientific research and analysis to support strategies for sustainable natural resource management of estuaries, rivers, and forests. The Institute analyzes the ecological effects of human activities on natural environments, and promotes the sustainable management and restoration of terrestrial and aquatic habitats through development of reliable scientific information, innovative management strategies, and education. Our objective is to carry research through to scientifically sound applications for resource management. To these ends, 10,000 Years Institute seeks and develops partnerships with other non-profit organizations, Native American tribes and nations, government organizations and other resource managers; and may also act independently.
Description
10,000 Years Institute is a Washington non-profit corporation, with its principal office in Port Townsend. It incorporated in 1992, and gained federal 501(c)(3) status in 1993. Staff and board members include resource managers and scientists with backgrounds in geology, geomorphology, ecotoxicology, chemistry, fisheries, aquatic ecology, wetland ecology, forest ecology, and forestry. The Institute undertakes interdisciplinary applied research, habitat restoration; and environmental education.
Vision
The “10,000 Years” refers to the most recent climatic-geologic period in which our local Pacific Northwest landscape has evolved, and to the temporal framework within which sustainable resource management approaches must be developed. Our focus is to understand the natural and human history of the earth’s imperiled forest and riverine ecosystems for the purposes of developing sustainable approaches to resource use.
10,000 Years Institute is unique in several aspects:
- It conducts high quality interdisciplinary research for publication.
- It has expertise and concentrates on the dynamic aspects of forest and river systems, and seeks to understand these processes at large space and time scales.
- It carries research through to scientifically sound applications for use by resource managers. The Institute strives to avoid positions of advocacy, but may engage in the analysis of laws, legal policies, and resource management proposals at all levels of government as they pertain to the long term sustainability of affected river and forest ecosystems and their inhabitants.
10,000 Years Institute is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation.
